Standing on the Promises of God
Standing on the Promises of God
Trusting God is a foundational principle in the Christian faith.
REFLECTING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND HIS PEOPLE.
It is more than a passive belief—it is an active reliance on God’s character, promises, and power.
We live in a world of broken promises, don’t we?
From political promises, to over-the-top ads for things to buy, claims that appears too good to be true.
In 1994, a 67-year-old carpenter named Russell Herman died in Marion, Illinois. In his last will and testament he left the following:
$2.4 billion to a nearby town
$2.4 billion to the city of East St. Louis
$1.5 billion for projects in southeastern Illinois
And in a final act of unprecedented generosity, he left $6 trillion to the Federal Reserve to pay off the national debt.
There was only one problem: at the time of his death, the only thing Mr. Herman actually owned was a 1983 Olds Toronado!
Russell Herman may not have left behind anything of monetary value, but he did leave us all with a good reminder: you can’t give away what you don’t possess.
The bottom line is that he did not have the resources to make any of this a reality.
Not so with God. He has all the means to make good on all His promises.
God’s promise to Abraham:
“Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:1-3, ESV).
This was an incredible promise, setting into motion the greatest testimony of God’s sovereignty and providence the world has ever seen.
In a world of broken promises, God can be counted on.
In 1956, Everet Storms, a school teacher, during his 27th reading of the Bible, There are 7,487 promises to man in 31,173 verses of the entire Bible.
The Bible is a general treasury of divine promises.
The Promise of Eternal Life
The Promise of Guidance
The Promise of the Lord’s Return
The Promise of Rest
The Promise of Victory
The Promise of Answered Prayer
The Promise of Wisdom
The Promise of Peace
The Promise of God’s Presence
The Promise of Forgiveness
“A promise is the assurance that God gives to His people so they can walk by faith.”
D.L. Moody: “God never made a promise that was too good to be true.”
Charles Spurgeon once said: “Do not treat God’s promises as if they were curiosities for a museum; but believe them and use them.”
Remember this: “A promise is the assurance that God gives to His people so they can walk by faith…while they wait for Him to work.”
God’s promises are many, running from Genesis to Revelation.
These promises are made by God Himself and therefore will be kept.
These promises reflect God’s character.
These promises are established beyond all doubt
WHEN WE CHOOSE TO TRUST GOD, WE DISCOVER THAT HIS PROMISES AREN’T JUST COMFORTING WORDS, THEY’RE LIVING TRUTHS THAT SUSTAIN US THROUGH REAL-LIFE STORMS.
Elijah being fed by ravens,
The widow whose jar of oil never ran out,
The Israelites receiving manna every morning,
Paul learning to be content in every circumstance,
Corrie ten Boom, whose stories remind us that God still provides, protects, and performs miracles today.
God’s promises have power!
They extend God’s lifeline of hope.
He offers them before you’ll ever need them.
They strengthen and encourage you when things look bleak.
They are answers to your life needs.
God’s promises are solutions to your problems-current and future ones.
Trust Is Essential for Peace
True peace does not come from perfect circumstances, but from trust in a perfect God.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
Trust Produces Obedience
Trust in God Provides Strength in Trials
Trust in God Opens Doors to Divine Help
Trust Is the Foundation for a Relationship with God
Trust Has Eternal Rewards
The Value of a Promise:
We are called upon to believe promises every day.
The car salesman makes promises, our political leaders make promises
HOW MANY OF THESE PROMISES DO YOU BELIEVE?
The value of a promise to be believed is based on:
The Integrity of the one who promised: The scriptures consistently argue for the trustworthiness of God.
The Ability of the one who promises
SLEEPING ON THE PROMISES
Resting in God’s Assurance
In times of chaos or worry, we can find comfort in God’s promises about sleep and rest.
The Bible encourages us to lean on God during our sleepless nights, reminding us that He is always in control.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by life’s challenges, but we can discover sweet sleep when we trust in God’s unwavering support.
We often forget that our Creator cares deeply for our well-being, and He invites us to entrust our burdens to Him.
So, as we meditate on these verses, let’s remember that resting in God’s assurance can lead us to a place of peace and sweet sleep.
Psalm 4:8
“In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” – Psalm 4:8
Proverbs 3:24
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” – Proverbs 3:24
Job 11:18
“You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety.” – Job 11:18
Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” – Isaiah 26:3
Conclusion
We can rest well because God keeps his promises!
