Sitting at Jesus’s Feet

Many Things and the One Thing

Life can get hectic, even suffocating at times. Everyone is always in a frantic rush to meet deadlines, do chores, and meet society’s expectations.

Topic: Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

  1. How many things are you juggling in life? How many plates do you have spinning? Are you anxious and troubled over many things? If you had to choose just one thing, what would it be and why? What is the one thing that is necessary in your life?

  1. We are very busy people. We all have many different responsibilities and facets to our lives. We live full and hurried lives where we juggle many different elements of family, work, relationships, hobbies, finances, managing the different aspects of our days, weeks, months, and years. We have a lot going on. We are anxious and troubled about many things.

  1. Many things are our reality, but only one thing is essential and necessary. Many things call for our attention, but only one thing is really worthy of all our attention and affection.

SITTING AT HIS FEET MEANS MAKING JESUS YOUR LIFE

Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

Mary of Bethany is famous for sitting at the feet of Jesus while her sister, Martha, played the role of hostess for their guests. And Martha is just as famous for not being happy about it. In fact, she took it up with Jesus. Jesus replied by saying, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).

Mary chose the good portion.

Not that Martha was wrong for having a servant’s heart, but Mary’s choice, sitting at the feet of Jesus, was right for her.

We all have things in our lives that claim our time. Whether it’s our families, a demanding work schedule, volunteering, or recreational activities. Those aren’t bad choices, but sometimes the right choice—the necessary thing—is to simply sit at the feet of Jesus. To learn from, and fellowship with, Him.

And that’s what sitting at the feet of Jesus is all about. Not just sitting to sit, but learning from Jesus. It’s about putting our hope in Him. It’s about finding our rest in Him.

Sitting at the feet of Jesus is a heart attitude more than anything else. It’s desiring to know Him more. Matthew 6:33 says, “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” That’s what it means to sit at the feet of Jesus: to seek Him out and let Him impact your heart.

Reasons for sitting at Jesus’ feet

1.    It allows us to hear from God.

2.    Reduce Anxiety

3.    Become more Like Jesus

Martha’s distraction leads to five Ds:

  • Disbelief – Martha asks, “Do you not care…?”

  • Defensiveness – Martha defends her place: “My sister has left me to serve alone.”

  • Decisiveness – Martha depersonalizes Mary as “my sister,” as though Mary is not even there.

  • Demands – Martha flat out says to Jesus, “Tell her to help me.”

  • Desperation – Martha attempts to control the situation—and Jesus—with her comment about being alone.

 Luke 8:26-35 NIV

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,

which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" 29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?"

"Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
