o Colossians 3:12: Believers are urged to "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience," suggesting that clothing can reflect one's spiritual state.
o 1 Peter 3:2-5: True beauty comes from inner character, not outward appearance.
We live in a world where people tend to believe their ways are right in their own eyes.
* True or false becomes relative, and many believe they can do whatever they think or feel is right.
* They have their own self righteousness, and find it hard to accept God’s absolute standard of righteousness.
Righteousness of Man vs. Righteousness of God
1. Righteousness, by human standards, is defined as “the quality of being morally true or justifiable.”
The justification is made according to the conformity of behavior with the regulation (or constitution, in the context of a nation).
2. Righteousness is the quality of being right in the eyes of God, including character (nature), conscience (attitude), conduct (action), and command (word).
* The "Righteousness of God" reflects God's perfect moral nature. It encompasses God's justice, holiness, and faithfulness.
* It’s the foundation of His relationship with humanity.
Theological Significance
Throughout the Bible, God demonstrates His righteousness by fulfilling His promises to His people. This covenantal aspect assures believers of God's reliability and steadfast love.
THROUGH CHRIST'S SACRIFICIAL DEATH AND RESURRECTION, BELIEVERS ARE DECLARED RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD, NOT BASED ON THEIR OWN MERITS, BUT ON THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST
"God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."
God brings freedom, healing, and release from whom we are and our past. "filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God."
BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO REFLECT GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IN THEIR OWN LIVES, PURSUING JUSTICE, HOLINESS, AND INTEGRITY.
Ephesians 4:24 exhorts, "and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." This call to righteousness is both a response to God's grace and an expression of the believer's new identity in Christ.
Garments of Salvation and a Robe of Righteousness
Isaiah 61:10, which states: "I will rejoice greatly in the LORD; my soul will exult in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom wears a priestly headdress, as a bride adorns herself with her jewels" .
This verse is a declaration of joy and gratitude for the divine act of salvation and righteousness bestowed upon the believer.
The imagery of "Garments of Salvation" and "Robe of Righteousness" is a profound biblical metaphor that encapsulates the transformative work of God in the life of a believer.
THESE TERMS ARE RICH WITH THEOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE, SYMBOLIZING THE DIVINE PROVISION OF SALVATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS THROUGH FAITH.
1. Garments of Salvation:
The "Garments of Salvation" symbolize the covering and protection provided by God's saving grace.
In the biblical context, garments often represent identity and status. By clothing His people with salvation, God is not only providing deliverance from sin and its consequences but also bestowing a new identity as His redeemed.
This imagery reflects the transformative nature of salvation, where the believer is not merely forgiven but is also renewed and restored to a right relationship with God.
The garment signifies the comprehensive nature of God's saving work, encompassing justification, sanctification, and ultimately glorification.
2. Robe of Righteousness:
The "Robe of Righteousness" signifies the imputed righteousness of Christ to the believer. In the conservative Christian understanding, righteousness is not something that can be achieved through human effort but is a gift from God, granted through faith in Jesus Christ.
This robe represents the believer's standing before God, justified and accepted because of the righteousness of Christ. It is a covering that allows the believer to stand blameless before a holy God, not because of their own merit, but because of the perfect righteousness of Christ credited to their account.
Symbolism and Application:
The imagery of clothing in the Bible often denotes a change in status or condition. Just as physical garments cover and protect the body, the spiritual garments of salvation and righteousness cover the believer, providing spiritual protection and signifying a new status as a child of God.
The metaphor also emphasizes the beauty and splendor of God's work in the believer's life. Just as a bride and bridegroom are adorned for their wedding, so too are believers adorned with the beauty of God's salvation and righteousness; reflecting His glory and grace.
In practical terms, these garments call believers to live in a manner worthy of their new identity, pursuing holiness and righteousness in their daily lives as a response to the grace they have received.
The "Garments of Salvation" and "Robe of Righteousness" are powerful symbols of the believer's new identity in Christ, highlighting the transformative and redemptive work of God.
Through these divine garments, believers are assured of their salvation and righteousness, CLOTHED IN THE BEAUTY AND SPLENDOR OF GOD'S GRACE.
The parable of the wedding banquet highlights the importance of being clothed in appropriate attire, symbolizing the need for righteousness to enter God's kingdom.
Mat 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
Mat 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
Mat 22:3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
Mat 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
Mat 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
Mat 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
Mat 22:7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
Mat 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
Mat 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Mat 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Mat 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
Mat 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
Mat 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
The Spiritual Significance
In Matthew 22:11 / The King and Host saw a man who had not a wedding garment.
It is said to have been an Oriental custom for the host to present each guest invited to a royal feast with a festive robe of honor, to be worn on the occasion.
This invited guest had not presented himself in attire befitting the solemnity; in his everyday garb
EVERY SAINT IS ROBED, NOT IN HIS OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, BUT IN THE WHITE ROBES OF CHRIST'S RIGHTEOUSNESS.
He therefore represents one who, while professing to be for Christ, thought his own righteousness would save him without a trustful obedience to the Savior."
The garment of righteousness is a gift from God, received through faith in Jesus Christ.
Our spiritual attire should reflect our inner transformation, demonstrating our commitment to holiness.
We are called to live lives that honor God, allowing our actions to be a reflection of the righteousness we have been given.
